a local man from Absecon, NJ who needed a Kidney Transplant received a letter from the Kidney Transplant Coordinator of a New Jersey Hospital, advising him and PICI that they would temporarily inactivate him from the Kidney Transplant Waiting List because of the multiple medical conditions that could have caused him difficulty in recovering from the transplant. The Transplant Coordinator added once his medical conditions were corrected, he may be a candidate to be on the Kidney Transplant List. His critical dental care was preventing him from being on the Kidney Transplant List due to the toxicity traveling through his system which was causing his organs to break down. He was not approved for Medicaid insurance because his income was approximately $25 over the eligibility threshold. He was too overwhelmed to keep applying for and being rejected by NJ Medicaid. He was mentally exhausted and wanted to give up. Under the guidance of Dr. Sandra Weibel, John Cooper and others, the PICI team were able to find a way for him to acquire Medicaid insurance which covered all of his Dental costs. He then faced yet another obstacle. The hospital was going to cancel his Kidney Transplant if a transportation plan was not approved for all follow up visits since the hospital was hours away and he was not capable of driving. PICI finally obtained transportation funding and without the funding he would not have acquired the transplant that could have cost him his life.
Dr. Weibel is aware of multiple patients with similar situations that can no longer have Liquid Oxygen because of the changes in Medicare. They cannot afford the additional fees charged to them through the oxygen companies. In addition many of the patients cannot afford inhalers. They only have access to inhalers if samples are provided by a doctor who only have limited supplies. For example, Joe has COPD and Sleep Apnea as well as compressed fractures of his back. The oxygen and inhalers are needed to maintain his functional status and are essential to treat his diseases. These are reasons PICI requires funding to act as an advocate and provide the financial assistance these patients require to obtain a sustainable life. A man with acute leukemia spent all of his saving and needed a bone marrow transplant. He didn’t want to go further with treatment if it would jeopardize his family due to cost. PICI found resources to assisted this gentleman through the transplant process and therefore he was able to receive his bone marrow transplant without risking his family financial future. A local man from Somers Point, New Jersey has Diabetes, an enlarged heart, Diabetic Neuropathy, Diabetic Retinopathy, he is partially blind and he has Kidney Disease. When he was in the Medicare Cover Gap (Donut Hole) with his insurance he was eligible for free insulin through Novo Nordisk Diabetic Patient Assistance Program. Now that the Medicare Cover Gap (Donut Hole) is over, he cannot afford his co-payments for the insulin and other medications. He can only pay for some of the medications therefore he is declining medically. This man needs immediate financial assistance for his survival! Another man who was victimized has multiple medical problems including severe allergies, complicated dental care, Diabetes and Pulmonary Disease which requires medical equipment and other needs that are not covered by his insurance. This man saved a woman’s life and has helped numerous people in their time of need however he has no one pulling for him in his time of need except PICI. A Veteran from Lower Township, NJ has severe Heart Disease and requires special nutritional supplements not covered by insurance. PICI acquired resources to attain food cards to help sustain his special nutritional needs. A family in Pleasantville, NJ with children were living in an uninhabitable dwelling. The walls and roof were leaking, mold was growing everywhere, windows were broken and there was no heat. All family members were ill requiring immediate assistance. PICI found the Atlantic County Improvement Authority Community Grant Program and assisted the family through the process which led to the grant approval for repairs. They are now living in a healthy home. PICI is assisting a husband and wife in Pleasantville. She has a heart condition and is living in their home which was damaged by hurricanes Sandy and Irene. A grant has been written to Home Depot to help with the materials needed. A contractor has been located who is willing to do the work but we need to supply the materials. We are seeking help with the materials in the attached list and are looking for volunteers to help with the construction needs. Kreative Construction from Egg Harbor Township is leading the project. Anyone wanting to help should contact Lana Samuels, Co-President of PICI at the number on the top of the page. Above are examples of what People in Crisis has accomplished with limited resources. Monetary donations are essential for their survival. |
